Self-massage for runners (prevent shin splints and ankle pain)
My blog: www.bodymindconspiracy.com
Want to make yourself less injury-prone when you run? Take 20 seconds to warm up the fasciae and muscles in your legs before you take off.
The protocol: Start with some compression and mobilization of the foot, pressing in to the sole and creating some movement of the metatarsals. Give the heel a good squeeze while you're down there. Next, make a circle around the ankle with one hand and "crank" the foot with the other. Follow this by using both hands to circle the ankle, twisting in opposite directions. You should feel this in your achilles tendon. By now, there should be some fresh circulation in your foot and ankle!
Sink your fingertips into your tibialis anterior muscle (and its friends) and compress toward the bone rhythmically, moving up toward the knee and down toward the ankle as you press. Next, do some nice petrissage (kneading) of your calf muscles. Use big hands for this, and try using the flats of your fingers if your fingertips are too sharp for this application.
Finish up with some superficial friction around the knee joint. Repeat on the other leg, and have a good run!
Let me know if you have any questions!

Hold the skin in a rotated position, starting near the elb...

Second, you may be able to get some relief by doing a bit of myofascial release on your own shoulder and upper chest. Go slow with this, keep breathing, and let me know if this works for you!

I used this massage several years ago for my tennis elbow and it helped immensely. I got away from it and had a bad flare up in both elbows. In the past 4 months, I have spent over a thousand dollars on physio and nothing worked. I started these massages again yesterday and it is the only thing that works, in my opinion. Thank you so much.

I do this regularly. I've seen other videos and different variations of this but this is my favorite, the only one that recommends making a fist to stretch the top side. Very helpful. Though I did run this past my physio and she strongly recommended I avoid the snap at the end, but keep the roll. Still this is the video I recommend to people! With that avoid the snap caveat.

Just discovered your channel, was copying as you were explaining, I could feel release in forearm muscles. The main point is still sore. But I am going to use your method in conjunction with tyler twists using a theraband bar (which I used in past to resolve long standing golfers elbow on other side). Thank you

That's not enough friend. You need to talk about if a person can't reach around with fingers like you, and what that would look like.. I would like to see a video of a guy who has frozen shoulder & upper arm pain and or at times.. The shoulder joint has some pain when I do my best to insert thumb. The hand I am using to put pressure is the shoulder that has pain. Whatever thumb I am using,, that shoulder joint is hurting, when I do that move, the pit that I put the thumb does not hurt.. Right now I put pressure on outter side of upper arm just below shoulder joint, and raise arm, that makes pain stop 🛑 and range of motion is better at that time only..

@Body-Mind Conspiracy - I am going to start doing these. Question: what is the best sleeping position. My arm gets stiff at night, seems tv regardless whether it is straight or bent. Trying pillows. Seems exercises therapy loosens me up in daytime but then I sleep in it wring and can barely move it the next morning.

No doctor has been able to help me with pain (except pain doc with his bandaid injections)...so, asking my various doctors is pointless. I even went to a top endocrinologist at Cleveland Clinic who had no answers for my problems. Holistic practitioners on the other hand have been an immense help! Along with kinesiology, chiropractor and massage therapist. 🙂
